IPS Online Forum on the IPS Post Election Survey on GE2020

2020-10-05

On October 1, Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) Social Lab Postgraduate Fellow Dr. Teo Kay Key presented the 2020 edition of IPS Post-Election Survey at a forum moderated by IPS Deputy Director (Research) and Senior Research Fellow Dr. Gillian Koh. Dr. Koh is also the Singapore national team coordinator for the Asian Barometer Survey
(ABS).

The 2020 survey results show that “good and efficient government” continues to be the top priority for respondents. The government's handling of Covid-19 is also one of the most important issues mentioned by voters. Although the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) is still seen as the most credible party by voters, the percentage of voters who viewed the PAP as the most credible party declined slightly from previous editions of the survey, with corresponding increases in the perceived credibility of opposition parties.

After Dr. Teo’s presentation, there was a discussion by a panel of experts, including Professor Yun-Han Chu, Director and Principal Investigator of the ABS. Professor Chu noted that like other East Asians, Singaporeans were more concerned about the substantive aspects of democracy, rather than the procedural and rights-based aspects.
